- Pipeline Internaut™ Software for Macintosh
- Version 1.25, March 1995
- by Arcus Incorporated,
- © 1994-95 PSINet/The Pipeline Network
-
- Welcome to Pipeline for Macintosh! This document assumes that you have
- just downloaded the software or received it by mail. If you have already
- used Pipeline for Macintosh, you may want to skim these notes anyway.
-
- To make the most of Pipeline for Macintosh, we recommend that you
- print these documents before going online.
-
- What you need: To use Pipeline for Macintosh, your Macintosh
- needs to run System 7 or greater and have at least 4 MB of RAM.
- More is preferable; if you only have 4, we recommend that you not
- run any other applications while running Pipeline for Macintosh.
-
- Before you do anything
- Drag the Apple Modem Tool over your closed System Folder, so your
- Macintosh installs it in the right place (in the Extensions Folder).
-
- Are you already a subscriber? You don't have to read the section
- for demo users, then. Please skip to the next document, "Once You've
- Subscribed."
-
- Starting as a demo user
- What the demo account allows (and doesn't allow):
- The demo account is meant to give you a sample of the Pipeline. You'll
- get an idea of how the interface works and how easy full Internet
- access is. However, you won't be able to send or receive mail, download
- files or graphics, or chat online.
-
- Subscribing on line:
- If you like what you see, you can subscribe to the Pipeline on line
- and have your accout in just minutes! Click on the "Subscribe On Line"
- option in the Main Menu (you won't miss it). It's best to have a credit
- card ready so you can enter your information. Of course, if you have
- any questions about the Pipeline, you're welcome to call us for more
- information.
-
- To connect as a demo user:
-
- 1. Double click on the Pipeline Internaut icon.
-
- 2. The Main Menu will appear. The software is pre-set for you to
- connect as a demo user; do not add or change any usernames
- or passwords.
-
- 3. Go to the Internet menu and choose "Connect." (You can also press
- command-k)
-
- 4. A box will come up with the username and password--don't change
- these.
-
- 5. Click on the "Access..." button to choose how you will connect
- to the Pipeline.
- • If you're calling from New York City, Long Island or area code 914,
- choose "normal dialup."
- • If you're calling from outside the New York area, you can dial a local
- Sprintnet number for $5.00/hour 8am-6pm Eastern Time on business
- days, $2.50/hour any other time. You can find your local Sprintnet
- number in the text file accompanying this software, "U.S. Access
- Numbers." If you want to use SprintNet, choose that option; otherwise
- leave the setting on "normal dialup." (Note: in the near future, you will
- be able to access Pipeline via PSINet, cheaper and more reliable. Stay
- tuned for announcements on the Today button or in the pipeline.macintosh
- newsgroup.)
- • You can't connect via rlogin or TCP as a demo user.
-
- 6. When you've chosen your access method, click on the Settings...
- button. This brings up the Apple Modem Tool configuration screen.
- • On the left side of the screen, you will see a Dial Phone Number
- box.
- • If you're calling using our 212, 914 or 516 number, scroll down
- the list to the right of the box by clicking on the arrow and dragging
- to the number of your choice.
- • If you're calling using SprintNet, type the SprintNet number in
- the box.
- • Configure your modem type and speed as appropriate-- the only
- things you may need to change are the modem type and the speed. Don't
- change any of the other settings.
-
- 7. When you're done configuring your modem, click on OK. You're
- ready to dial-- click on Connect.
-
- 8. Within moments, your modem should dial and you'll be online!
- Enjoy your taste of the Internet. To subscribe, go to the Internet
- menu and choose "Subscribe to the Pipeline!" Your account can be
- created in minutes.
-
- Was there a problem? Your modem may be configured incorrectly.
- Please see the document titled "Diagnosing Connect Problems" for
- more help.
- If the problem was something else, please call us at 212-267-3636
- or mail staff@pipeline.com (if you're online with a different service).
